Nolan – Senior session.

I donated a couple of senior sessions to a local charity event, it included a full shoot and an 11 x 14 print. And that’s how I met Nolan for his senior session. Well, it started with his mom actually, she was the auction bidder.

I do like to donates things like this to a local charity auction. The charity gets the money raised, the buyer gets a great deal on their photo session, and I get to photograph nice people.  Win, win, win.

After a discussion with Nolan’s mom regarding the best locations, we took a little trip to Quarton Lake, Birmingham. It was a close location for both of us, and the day we arranged it, I had a wedding to photograph quite some distance away. A local location worked out well.

The weather was beautiful and sunny. Sunny, that less than ideal condition for a photographer, strangely enough. It plays havoc when it’s really stark, and in fact, take a quick look at the first image – see the hot spot on the tree?  That’s the challenge, keeping that off of the models face!

Usually you can walk around and find some shaded areas, or perhaps put the sun behind the model so they don’t have bright blotches on them, and don’t have to squint. Beautiful as Quarton Lake is, it’s not ideal in this situation. Everything was open pretty much.

Notice the background in the bench shots – the sun is blasting all over it.  So here I was with a film star senior model – and challenging conditions. Drat!

Nolan was up to the task though, he shone through it all, (pun intended) and we were able to get some very nice shots. I brought the camera, he brought the film star looks!
